The reasons churches have part-time pastors vary. Some congregations are too large to be staffed by a solo pastor but too small to call a full-time associate pastor. Other congregations in decline call part-time pastors because they can't afford more. Some churches have thrived with a part-time pastor for many years and wouldn't dream of changing. Sometimes a full-time pastor will ask a congregation to cut back the pastor's hours to part-time. This brief essay discusses some realities of part-time pastoral ministry.
