Midlife can be a time of questioning, discomfort, and feeling off balance. It can also be a time of exhilarating discovery. For many people, the midlife years present opportunities for deep and meaningful spiritual growth.
When is midlife? Some experts say it is the years between thirty-five and fifty-five; others say forty to sixty. Some say midlife begins for single people when they realize they will not have children, and it begins for parents when their children hit their teens. Others define midlife as that time--whenever it happens--when we realize our life is more than half over and that death is inevitable. For the purposes of this lesson, we can agree that anyone who is experiencing any of the symptoms or characteristics of midlife will benefit from the discussion, whatever his or her age.
Midlife is characterized by painful losses and bright discoveries. The losses can include deaths of family members or friends, health issues, and family challenges. The discoveries may include new artistic endeavors, the rediscovery of a joy from childhood, and newfound skills that enhance work and personal life. The first session explores the losses and discoveries of midlife. The second session looks at spiritual paths that can bring richness and depth at this time of life.
